Mercedes-Benz Superdome Selects Act Global’s Synthetic Turf

As Louisiana’s premier sports and entertainment venue for the past 42 years, the stadium is rich in social and cultural history. It is best known for hosting the New Orleans Saints, seven Super Bowls and the annual college Allstate Sugar Bowl and New Orleans Bowl. In addition, the historic Bayou Classic matching Southern University against Grambling State University will be played on November 25. As such, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome requires a turf surface that can meet the rigor and performance demands of the top pro and college players.

The synthetic turf by Act Global is engineered and tested to offer a superior playing surface for the players. This proven methodology includes a wide range of quality and durability checks, biomechanical measurements and surface testing. “Act Global is honored to have been selected by such a well-respected organization,” comments Act Global CEO John Baize. “We are impressed by the amazing professionals at the stadium who demand the best for their teams. We are committed to staying at the forefront of player safety and performance for the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and all our clients. Every player is important and our purpose is to serve their playing needs.”

Action Floor Systems® Products Achieve FloorScore® Certification

Action Floor Systems announces the FloorScore Certification of its Action Solid Maple Hardwood Flooring and Action Herculan Pad and Pour Systems, furthering the Action Floor Systems reputation of producing environmentally-friendly products.

FloorScore Certification is the most highly recognized indoor air quality (IAQ) certification for hard surface flooring materials.

To become FloorScore Certified, SCS Global Services measures the levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are emitted from a product. A product must meet the VOC emission standards of the California Section 01350 Program and the SCS-EC 10.3-2014 IAQ Standard.

“FloorScore Certification proves that our products support indoor air quality for our customers,” said Don Brown, Action Floor Systems technical director. “FloorScore Certification supports our commitment to green and healthier buildings. As building construction continues to evolve, green building will become the norm, as will buildings that provide a healthier environment.”

Lower VOC emissions contribute to healthier air and less indoor air pollution. Good IAQ and low VOC levels are vital for schools and sports facilities, and help to manage the effect of daily allergies that people endure related to poor air quality.

FloorScore Certification was developed by SCS Global Services in partnership with the Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI), a trade association of flooring manufacturers and supporters. FlooreScore Certification qualifies for green building schemes such as LEED v4, WELL, BREEAM, and CHPS.

Action Floor Systems® Achieves Highest Level of EPD® Certification

Action Floor Systems, a manufacturer of maple sports flooring systems and supplier of premium synthetic sports and commercial flooring systems, recently achieved Environmental Product Declaration (EPD®) certification on its maple sports flooring, becoming the first in its industry to receive the highest level of certification.

EPD® is an independently verified certification that transparently communicates the elements of a product and its effects on the environment, from start to finish, throughout its life cycle.

To receive EPD® certification, a company must meet the requirements of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), industrywide Product Category Rules (PCR), and International Organization Standards (ISO).

“Receiving a Proprietary EPD® certification reinforces Action Floors’ commitment to the environment and sustainable healthy building initiatives,” said Don Brown, Action Floors technical director. “When architects, facility managers, or dealers source products from our company, they know they are getting a product with a responsible environmental footprint.”

SCS Global Services, a leader in third-party environmental and sustainability certification and standards development, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison conducted LCA studies on Action Floors’ maple hardwood systems. The studies were used to assess the environmental and human health impacts of a product through all stages of its life cycle.

The EPD® report discloses all the information required in ISO and PCR and includes a complete description of the product, the LCA study and its results, and any further environmental information a customer might need for product sourcing. Customers who purchase products with EPD® certification can also earn valuable LEED credits.

ATG Sports Completes CarShield Field (MO) in Record Time

Despite a wet winter and early spring that eliminated construction for nearly three consecutive weeks, ATG Sports completed the CarShield Field project 10 days ahead of schedule on April 25, 2017. The project was designed by Weis Design Group for the City of O’Fallon, Missouri and the Frontier Leagues’ River City Rascals.

River City Rascals President Dan Dial states, "Not only did ATG complete the project within our very tight window, but they did it while battling several weeks of wet and soggy weather in which they were not able to work at all at times. Because of these obstacles, ATG worked longer hours and even weekends to make sure the job got done so our players could get on the field for the start of spring training. They took time away from their families so they could leave an indelible impression on our team and community; they definitely did.”

CarShield Field features high performance RamTurf Baseball, which is formulated specifically to mimic the play of a well maintained natural baseball field. RamTurf Baseball is a high use product that combines high face weight, UV resistant fibers, and the latest tufting technology. RamTurf Baseball features parallel long fibrillated fibers and dense texturizes fibers to provide an extremely durable turf that optimizes ball roll and minimizes infill movement. The turf system utilizes ArmorLoc 3L primary backing and Silverback secondary coating to deliver the world’s strongest turf backing system. The complete system will ensure the safest possible synthetic surface that looks and performs like a well maintained natural field on its best day, every day. See more at www.atgsports.com.

Blazer Athletic Equipment installs new powder coating equipment

Blazer has recently expanded its production capabilities with the purchase of a new powder coating system. By adding this capability, the equipment manufacturer will be able to internalize all coating processes and provide customers with added durability and faster turnaround time on products. At 10’ wide, 10’ tall, and 20’ long, the booth and oven are large enough to accommodate a wide array of athletic equipment.
Blazer Athletic Equipment is located in Fremont, Nebraska and its manufacturing plant is located in Columbus, Nebraska.

Broce/TRS Builds Prototype

Broce/TRS has built a prototype winding unit that would allow contractors to roll up to 15 feet of cut rolls with the infill intact. This would allow contractors to re-utilize larger width rolls on other recreational surfaces. The new roller mechanism is designed to expand the capability of the TRS Wrangler base unit fitted with the Winder attachment. We plan to have this anticipated low cost option available for the 2018 season.”

Chaminade College Preparatory School and Byrne & Jones Construction
Continue their Lasting Relationship with the Construction of New Baseball Facility

As one of the top private high schools in the Midwest, Chaminade College Preparatory School has always ensured that their students receive the highest quality education through academics and athletics. To provide their students with the best experience they can receive, Chaminade also needs to be sure their facilities are state-of-the-art. This is why Chaminade has trusted Byrne & Jones Construction with all of their sports construction needs over the past 25 years.

In 1993, Byrne & Jones built Chaminade’s original running track. Since then, we have successfully maintained the track with the retopping of the structural spray wearing course. Just this past summer, Byrne & Jones was called on yet again for the removal and replacement of the original black mat & structural spray.

In 2009, Byrne & Jones built Chaminade’s first synthetic turf field just North of their running track to be a stand-alone multipurpose field. This became the main practice field for football, soccer, lacrosse, and all other activities that Synthetic Turf is meant to uphold.

In 2016, Chaminade opted to further upgrade their athletic facilities and put in place a plan to ensure all of their student athletes were playing on top-quality synthetic turf surfaces. The first phase of this project was to install a new multipurpose field. Byrne & Jones retrofit the existing natural surface with a beautiful synthetic turf field within the track that we built so many years ago, full with lines for football, soccer, and lacrosse.

Needing to also cater to their baseball team, Chaminade’s second phase of their athletic facility improvements began this summer B&J broke ground on a new $2.5 million baseball stadium. The project includes includes removing the old synthetic turf football field, installing a 15’ tall by 300’ long retaining wall, grandstand, press box, dugouts, and the construction/expansion of new synthetic turf baseball field in place of the existing practice field.

Byrne & Jones is extremely proud of the facilities and more importantly the relationships that we have built with Chaminade over the course of the past 25 years.

Colorado State University–Pueblo Supports Football Program with Renovations

Colorado State University–Pueblo is a fully accredited university with an enrollment of nearly 5,200 students. In 2016, a non-profit organization based in Pueblo, Colo. called Friends of Football (FOF), embarked on a campaign called Lift up the Pack to raise money to replace the turf on the football field and remodel the basement of the existing Field House and build a 10,000 square foot weight training facility.

The Filed House upgrades included renovating the basement and existing weight room to include more lockers, an expanded equipment room, and a new training room for the student athletes. The building features a 10,000-square-foot weight room with 5,000-square-feet of Ecore Athletic Performance Monster Roll. FieldTurf is the Choice at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the New Home of NFL's Atlanta Falcons and MLS's Atlanta United

FieldTurf will be the official playing surface for the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium. FieldTurf --- the turf of choice for most NFL and MLS teams and the world leader in artificial surfacing --- announced it will be the official playing surface at Mercedes-Benz Stadium as well as at the indoor practice field at the Atlanta Falcons’ training complex in Flowery Branch, GA. FieldTurf will also provide the playing surfaces at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground, Atlanta United’s new training facility.

Both the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and MLS’s Atlanta United will play their home games on the FieldTurf at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

“We are proud to have FieldTurf as our official surfacing partner for Mercedes-Benz Stadium,” said AMB Sports & Entertainment President Rich McKay. “We’ve been partners with FieldTurf for over 14 years and when looking at turf for our new facilities there was no other choice that made sense for us.”

“We are committed to providing the best turf playing surface available for our players,” said Atlanta United President Darren Eales. “FieldTurf is known to provide top quality surfaces for soccer facilities, including the Portland Timbers’ Providence Park which is considered the best turf surface in MLS. We are pleased to partner with FieldTurf as our official surface provider.”

The latest FieldTurf technologies are featured at the various Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United installations:

  • All of the aforementioned installations will be FieldTurf’s Revolution 360 surface, the company’s absolute top-of-the-line product. Revolution 360 is FieldTurf’s latest monofilament fiber and is the industry’s new standard. It is quickly becoming the most popular surface in North America and is already in use at many of the nation’s top facilities including Providence Park, home to MLS’s Portland Timbers, as well as CenturyLink Field, the home of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and MLS’s Seattle Sounders.

  • FieldTurf’s innovative pad system, known as VersaTile will be installed at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and on three Atlanta United turf training fields. VersaTile not only provides exceptional performance for the athlete with respect to shock attenuation and player comfort, but also provides unmatched drainage properties.

  • FieldTurf’s performance-proven cooling system, CoolPlay, has been installed on over 100 fields across the U.S. and has also been installed on the three Atlanta United turf training fields. CoolPlay is laboratory-tested and proven to reduce surface temperature by up to 35 degrees compared to traditional turf systems.

“We are absolutely thrilled to work with the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United to provide both teams with FieldTurf’s latest-and-greatest state-of-the-art playing surface,” said FieldTurf President Eric Daliere. “We are extremely proud to have our product set the pace as the industry’s standard-bearer for player safety and playability. FieldTurf’s Revolution 360 is named after the concept of completeness and its fiber features optimal durability, resilience and feel---it is the industry’s first complete fiber. FieldTurf’s Revolution 360 achieved a score of 83 on the Fiber Performance Index (FPI), which is the highest score in the industry. It is also the only turf to have withstood 150,000 Lisport cycles (the industry’s test to determine fiber wear).

GT Grandstands Constructs New Stadium for Renowned Celebration and Rodeo in Salt Lake City

On July 19, Salt Lake City welcomed the start of its annual Days of ’47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo celebration with a new grandstand for spectators. GT Grandstands, a leading manufacturer of grandstands in the US, designed and manufactured the new structure to provide fans of the rodeo comfortable, modern seating accommodations during the annual festivities.

The Komatsu Equipment Days of ’47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo is an annual tradition celebrated in Utah. The celebration honors the pioneers that entered the Great Salt Lake region in 1847 looking for freedom of religion. This festival brings an estimated 32,000 visitors to the area annually and includes activities such as parades, concerts, and the most popular event, the Rodeo. Each year, the Days of ’47 Rodeo hosts some of the most talented athletes in the US as they compete in bareback riding, bull riding, team roping, and many other events.

Due to growth in attendance and event popularity, organizers looked to GT Grandstands to increase the amount of seats available for fans. The new venue includes over 10,000 wide chair seats, partial roof covering for optional shade, powder coated risers, and vinyl coated chain link guard rails. The galvanized, i-beam structure also features an interlocking deck and a new 24’ announcer booth for improved audio projection. "The Days of '47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo would like to thank GT Grandstands for helping us build the arena in record time,” commented Dan Shaw, President and CEO of Days of '47 Rodeo, “we are thrilled to provide one of the finest rodeo venues in the nation for both our cowboys and fans, as we celebrate our pioneer heritage during the Days of '47 celebrations.”

Har-Tru, LLC and NLS Lighting are Teaming Up

Har-Tru, LLC and NLS Lighting are teaming up to deliver NLS Lighting’s VUE fixture to the tennis industry. VUE TENNIS is an innovative, LED system that has been designed by a nationally- ranked, tennis player and lighting engineer specifically for tennis. Har-Tru will start marketing and selling the line immediately.

"This is an exceptional product," says Tracy Lynch, Har-Tru's Director of Sales. "The VUE is achieving strong, uniform levels of light even at ten feet above the court surface, and that is where the ball is traveling much of the time. This just blows away anything we have seen from other systems. Installation is easy as well. All you have to do is take down the existing fixture (and sometimes the arm) and put a new one up in its place."

Typical fixtures use LED’s that stick out below the bottom of the fixture and are covered with a plastic lens. VUE Tennis recesses its LED’s far into the housing and protects them with a single glass lens significantly reducing glare and light loss. The system has a proven track record with installations at many of the nation’s premier facilities. It easily mounts to existing arms and comes with a 10-year warranty.

"We are constantly seeking product concepts that help create a better place to play," commented Sandy Hunt, who manages Har-Tru's product line. "That is why we are so excited about the VUE. It improves playing conditions, reduces the cost of ownership for facilities, and is better for the environment. It is not often we get a package like that to share with our customers!"

"We are confident that Har-Tru is the right company to represent our tennis line," says Bill Hein, President of NLS Lighting. "They are extremely connected to the game of tennis, the courts and equipment, and the player experience. They also have a team with a proven track record of delivering product solutions that solve a need for their customers. Placing VUE Tennis in their hands just makes sense."

SportsEdge® Part of GA Southern’s Baseball Facility Transformation

J. I. Clements Stadium is home to the Georgia Southern University Eagles college baseball team and has been long known as one of the nicest college baseball facilities in the country.

The stadium was renovated during the 2016–2017 offseason in preparation of hosting the 2017 Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship. Improvements included the outfield wall being replaced with the SportsEdge ChampionWall® with increased distance from home plate, the old electronic scoreboard in left field was replaced with a video board, a hand operated scoreboard was added in right field, and new synthetic turf in the bullpens and foul territory.

The SportsEdge ChampionWall replaced the old fence to provide a professional look to the park replacing the existing chain link system and wind screen. The first thing you’ll notice when you enter the J. I. Clements Stadium is the new 24-foot high “Blue Monster” wall in right field. The Eagles idea of incorporating a manual scoreboard into the Monster Wall really added to the nostalgic baseball feel.

ChampionWall is made from extruded PVC in the form of interlocking panels. With ChampionWall there is no painting, no denting, no rust, no rot, no tearing, and no windscreens to attach. For many years SportsEdge® has led the way in identifying and responding to the needs of the sports construction marketplace by designing and supplying revolutionary products that improve the quality and aesthetics for sports facilities of all kinds. SportsEdge is proud to be the exclusive distributor of ChampionWall®, the Athletic Fence System that takes your game to the next level!

Sportsfield Adds Permanent Filming Towers to Product Lineup

In 2017, Sportsfield Specialties, Inc. (SSI) introduced its first line of permanent filming towers, which two NCAA Division I colleges quickly took notice of. The University of Delaware purchased a 15’H SSI filming tower to support video coverage of games and practices at Fred P. Rullo Stadium, home of the 2016 NCAA Division I field hockey champions. Boston College ordered two sets of 20’H and 10’H filming towers to be installed at both their soccer and field hockey complexes.

The base plate mounted permanent structures are constructed with powder coated steel and aluminum, providing more stability and safety than portable towers or lifts that can fail in high winds. Standard SSI Filming Towers are available with 4’ x 8’ and 6’ x 8’ platform dimensions with elevations of 6’, 10’, 15’, and 20’. Each tower includes a roof, picket railing with gate, and access by ships ladder or stairs. All parts of the tower, from top to bottom, are designed, engineered and manufactured by SSI.

At the University of Delaware, SSI worked on a tight schedule to complete installation before a pre-season ceremony in mid-August. The filming tower was powder coated with the custom hue, Blue Streak II, which achieved a successful match to the well-known school color used by the Blue Hens. In Boston, SSI added custom touches, such as drop-down front railings, vinyl weather enclosures, and lockable doors at the base of the towers to prevent unwanted entry.

SSI’s roster of standard filming towers, paired with their customization abilities, helps the sports construction industry meet the demands of athletic programs who embrace the digital era. Jake Newkerk, Mid-Atlantic Regional Sales Manager at SSI explained, “Video review and performance analysis are becoming the standard. SSI’s goal is to fulfill the demand and offer equipment to capture elevated footage in a safe environment.”
