FROM THE  CHAIR

Join ASBA in New Orleans for Technical Meeting

Pete Smith, CTCB

ASBA Chairman

Two years have passed since I received the gavel from Dan Wright and your nomination as Chairman of ASBA. It has been an extremely rewarding experience to have worked and served with so many close friends - people whom I respect and learn from every time we’re together. The organization continues to grow. Membership now stands at nearly 450 companies and we continue to see double-digit growth each December at our Technical Meeting. We have added a March Regional meeting to our program (next year’s will be held in Kansas City, March 7-8), and countless other new initiatives.

As we have shared, ASBA has expanded its Indoor Division into our new “Courts & Recreation” Division earlier this year. The new division incorporates both indoor and outdoor versions of such sports as basketball, volleyball, futsal, pickleball, etc. Construction guidelines have been developed for pickleball courts in collaboration with the USA Pickleball Association. The goal is to provide a source of education and networking for members currently involved in designing and building these projects; and for consumers who are seeking professionals to engage in such projects. Randy Resley, of Sport Court of the Rockies, has been named President of the new division. Randy will be working closely with ASBA leadership, staff and enthusiastic member volunteers who are actively engaged in designing and building these venues to create programs and resources. Interested volunteers should contact Fred Stringfellow at fred@stringfellowgroup.net

At the end of the summer we surveyed our builders to gauge the season and how 2017 compared to 2016. Across the board, in separate surveys of Tennis Court, Track and Field builders, business appears to be up as much as 10-20% or more for most builders. Similar surveys of builders the last 3 years have shown similar results, indicating at least three solid years of growth. A summary of those results are included in this issue of Newsline. Many thanks to the builders who completed these “quick pulse” surveys when they were sent out. This is valuable benchmarking information for our individual companies and ASBA can only provide it if we get a good response from our members.

By now you should have received your membership dues renewal notices for the coming year (ASBA’s membership year begins October 1st). Please renew your membership and continue to support the efforts that ASBA is making on our behalf – with programs to increase awareness among consumers and industry partners, and education and training to enhance the pipeline for talent for our companies to hire.

I hope to see all of you December 1st – 5th at the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans, Louisiana for the Technical Meeting. In addition to the great education in the classroom, and the networking in the exhibit hall and on the golf course, you can help us celebrate the exemplary work done by ASBA members as we honor this year’s award winners. Please join me in New Orleans and help me in welcoming Kristoff Eldridge, CTB, as the incoming Chairman of ASBA for the coming two years!

See you in New Orleans!

Pete Smith, CTCB
