ASBA Newsline

News from the American Sports Builders Association                                                        October 2016

Business is Good

At the end of the summer we surveyed our builders to gauge the season and how 2016 compared to 2015. Across the board, in separate surveys of Tennis Court, Track and Field builders, business appears to be up as much as 10-20% or more for most builders. A similar survey of tennis court builders last year showed similar results, indicating at least two solid years of growth. A summary of those results are included in this issue of Newsline. Many thanks to the builders who completed these “quick pulse” surveys when they were sent out. This is valuable benchmarking information for our individual companies and ASBA can only provide it if we get a good response from our members. The next time we send out a quick pulse survey, please take 2-3 minutes to complete the information so that we can provide you with the aggregate data. DETAILS

Last Call for the Technical Meeting in Amelia Island!

Maybe you attended last year’s Technical Meeting and you thought it was great. Maybe you missed it and heard the rave reviews. Either way, it’s time for you to get on board with the 2016 version of the meeting, to be held December 2-6 at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation in Amelia Island, Florida. DETAILS

ASBA's Keynote Speaker, Michael Hoffman: You Won't Want to Miss the Message!

If you’ve been to the Technical Meeting, you know the quality and excitement our keynote speaker brings to the event. This year will be no different. Join us as we welcome Michael Hoffman, CSP, who will help us get motivated and stay invigorated. Here are a few tidbits to whet your appetite.  DETAILS

Pre-Meeting Learning at the Technical Meeting: Sign Up Now!

Last year, the Technical Meeting debuted an innovative new idea: an extended learning session that took place prior to the meeting. ASBA always heard people say they wished some sessions could run longer, since the speaker had so much to offer. And in 2015, ASBA offered a special afternoon session, prior to the Opening Reception, to focus on in-depth learning on a specific industry topic.

That session was such a success that we’re doing it again. This year’s session, “Performance Testing in Athletic Construction,” will be conducted by Michael Gentile of Sports Labs USA. It will be offered on Saturday, December 3, from 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm and is available for a nominal fee.

Please note that you must sign up for this event in advance. It is not included in your regular Technical Meeting registration fee, so go to, click on “Events” from the top menu bar, then select “2016 Technical Meeting” from the drop-down. You’ll find the link to register on the page that appears.

Head for Mexico with ASBA

ASBA will be venturing south of the border and down to Mexico for its 2017 Winter Meeting. The meeting, to be held February 24-26, 2017, at the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort in Riviera Maya, will be a great opportunity for a mid-winter escape with a lot of opportunities for getting work done.

Join ASBA to work on projects and publications, as well as to do committee work and map out the year ahead. This is where suggestions are made for Technical Meeting topics, position papers and more. If you’ve never explored this meeting before, it’s time you took the plunge.

Work sessions are held in the morning, leaving afternoons free for you to catch up with colleagues – or just to relax. And at this resort, an all-inclusive five-star beachfront property, you’ll have the chance to do both. In addition to multiple restaurants, a spa, tennis and a variety of water sports, the spectacular beach includes white sand, crystal-clear water and a coral reef.

Plus, ASBA offers its own tennis and golf events for attendees and their guests. Challenge your colleagues and competitors and earn the bragging rights you’ve been dying to get.

This meeting is one of ASBA’s most valuable events, and serves to help move the Association forward. Don’t miss your chance to check it out.

Information is expected to be available after the Technical Meeting. Members of ASBA will receive this automatically; all others can request to be put on the mailing list.

For information call 866-501-ASBA (2722) or Information will also be posted on the ASBA website automatically.

ASBA's Track Manual: On Track for Publication

Running Tracks: A Construction & Maintenance Manual is expected to be available for purchase in October.

All members will be notified when the book is published. (As always, the book will be available in both hard copy and electronic form.)

Kudos to the members of the Track Division who have been working hard on this publication. As a side note, updates that are being made to the book will also be incorporated into the CTB exam, so that ASBA stays fully up to date with all industry standards.

The publication contains updated information on all national governing body rules, as well as new diagrams and information on all aspects of track design, construction, rehab, repair, marking and more.

If you’re looking for a current issue of the publication, it is still available, and can be found on the ASBA website, under the “Publications” tab.

Put Your Name on a Winning Publication: ASBA's Awards Brochure

The Olympics. The Super Bowl. The World Series. March Madness. Everyone likes to be associated with a winner – that’s why sponsorship of those events is so much in demand.

This year, ASBA is giving you the chance to put your name behind a winner: the Association’s annual awards program. We’re currently accepting reservations for sponsorship in the special 16-page brochure that will be given out at this year’s Facilities of the Year Awards Recognition Dinner, being held on Monday, December 5, on Amelia Island, FL, at the Technical Meeting.

The brochure will recognize all of this year’s winners and, specifically, feature photos and brief profiles of the “Outstanding” facility award winners, along with listing ASBA members who contributed to the winning projects. The awards brochure will also highlight the silver and bronze winners, too. We have contracted with Peter Francesconi, of Ace Media Group, to help coordinate the piece.

The brochure will be made available at the close of the awards dinner. Additionally, we will distribute the awards piece throughout the year at trade shows, etc. as a representation of the quality for which ASBA and its builders stand.

Sponsoring organizations will be listed on the back cover of the awards brochure in a uniform space under the heading “ASBA’s Brochure Sponsors Congratulate the winners of the 2016 Facility Awards.” Want to see a copy of last year’s brochure? Call our office at 866-501-2722 and we’ll mail you one.

The cost to be listed in the awards piece, with your company logo, will be $400. The deadline for sponsorship commitments is Monday, October 31. Full information is available from Cynthia Sanchez at  .
