ASBA Is Having a Successful Year

Summer is here and undoubtedly keeping us all busy as we ramp up to finish projects before the kids go back to school. I’m pleased to report that ASBA is coming off a busy and successful Winter/Spring season of meetings and programs…and gearing up for more ahead. DETAILS

2017 Technical Meeting:
The Most Valuable Time You'll Invest All Year

When you’ve finished your busy season…

When you’re not quite ready to think about the next one…

When you really need to reconnect with your colleagues and your industry…

…it’s time to make plans to go to the ASBA Technical Meeting. The meeting, which will be held December 1-5, 2017, in New Orleans, Louisiana, has everything you need to decompress from this season and still stay on top of your game. DETAILS

ASBA’s Regional Meeting: Put it on Your Schedule

ASBA’s second Regional Meeting will be held March 7-8, 2018 at the Intercontinental Kansas City at the Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Regional Meeting provides an excellent opportunity for interaction with not only other contractors, but suppliers and members of the design professional industry. It’s also a great way of getting to know others in the area, and expanding your understanding of different regional markets.

More information on this meeting will be posted as it becomes available; in the meantime, make sure it’s on your calendar.

Mark Your Calendar for the Winter Meeting

Pull out your phone and block off February 23-25, 2018 for the ASBA Winter Meeting. This year’s Winter Meeting – an outstanding opportunity to work on publications, committees, position papers and more – will be held at the Meritage Resort and Spa in Napa, California.

ASBA will publish more information as it gets closer. In the meantime, make sure it’s on your calendar!

ASBA's Keynote Speaker Garrison Wynn

Over the years, Technical Meetings have come to expect excellence from our keynote speakers. This year will be no exception to that rule.

The 2017 keynote speaker is Garrison Wynn, leader of Wynn Solutions. Wynn’s address, entitled, “The REAL Truth about Success What the Top 1 Percent Do Differently and Why They Won’t Tell You,” is guaranteed to bring a morning of laughing, learning and walking out with a completely different perspective on leadership and what it means to be a winner.

Standout success in a challenging economy often comes from personal advantage, whether it’s perceived value, personality, leadership style, communication skills, abundant resources, or access to privileged information. This entertaining session takes a realistic look at the influence you’ll need to make sure your knowledge and hard work deliver the results you want.

You’re sure to leave the address wanting more – and fortunately, ASBA has it! That very afternoon, Wynn will present a breakout session, entitled, “Essential Strategic Leadership: Making Employee Engagement Actually Happen.” Need an encore? You can find one in Wynn’s next presentation that same day, “Getting Great Results: Turning Talent into Performance.”

Garrison Wynn’s keynote address, as well as the breakout sessions, are sponsored by Stockmeier Urethanes USA, Inc.

Come Play with ASBA

Planning on coming to the Technical Meeting? You’ll want to make time in your schedule for some golf or tennis (or both!) with your colleagues. These optional activities are available at an additional cost – and spaces go quickly, so be sure to sign up as soon as possible.

On Friday, December 1, you can hit the links at ASBA’s Golf Outing at TPC Louisiana. A public course, TPC was designed by Pete Dye, working in conjunction with PGA TOUR players Steve Elkington and Kelly Gibson – a New Orleans native. The course was named “the #4 best upscale public golf course” by Golf Digest magazine when it debuted in 2004. TPC Louisiana is consistently included in GolfWeek’s “Best Courses You Can Play” and is listed as a Golf Digest Top 100 Public Golf Course.

This event is sponsored by Liberty Tire Recycling.

Want to spend some time on the courts instead? Saturday, December 2 brings the ASBA Tennis Tournament. This event will be held at the Hilton Indoor Tennis Center. You’ll be playing on the only indoor, air-conditioned courts in all of New Orleans, so bring your shoes, your racquet and your playing clothes and get ready to challenge your colleagues and competitors to a fun afternoon.

This event is sponsored by California Sports Surfaces.

Want to Become Certified? Now is the Time

If you promised yourself that this was the year you’d pursue your CTCB, CFB or CTB certification, it’s time to start putting those wheels in motion.
All the information on certification is available under the tab for “Certification” at the top of ASBA’s home page, Note that you must fill out all forms in advance in order to sit for the test. The deadline for application is 30 days prior to each test.

The next time the exam will be given is:

December 2, 2017
ASBA Technical Meeting
New Orleans, LA

It will also be given at the following locations; dates will be provided shortly:

Sports Turf Managers Association Conference
Fort Worth, TX
Conference Dates: January 16-19, 2018

ASBA Winter Meeting
Meritage Resort and Spa
Napa, California.
Meeting Dates: February 23-25, 2018

By appointment at ASBA Headquarters in Maryland.

Awards Program Update

If you’re looking for an announcement of the winners of ASBA’s awards program….well, make your plans now to attend the Technical Meeting in New Orleans this December. That’s where a formal announcement of all winners will finally be made to everyone.
In the meantime, though, we can tell you this:

ASBA’s awards program closed on June 1. A total of 100 entries were received. These covered categories including Tennis, Track, Track & Field, Fields and –new this year – Pickleball. All of these categories have multiple divisions (including, in many cases, indoor, outdoor and residential.)

And since this year will be the first we’ll be recognizing the Courts & Rec Division, we have upgraded those awards, too. This year, you’ll see awards given in Indoor Multi-Purpose Field House, Indoor Multi-Purpose Gymnasium, Indoor Multi-Purpose Fitness & Wellness facility.

Winners of all awards are highlighted in ASBA’s special Awards Brochure, a glossy publication that has become one of the top marketing materials for member companies. This publication, which has won graphic design awards, is just one of the opportunities awaiting award winners.

Make your plans now to attend the Technical Meeting – announcement of the winners is only a few months away!

Coming Soon: A New Fields Manual

One of ASBA’s biggest-selling publications, Sports Fields: A Construction & Maintenance Manual, is in the works! The committee has been hard at work on the book, and it’s in the final stages of development.

Look for the new publication to have information on:

  • An update on the synthetic fields controversy

  • Information on alternative infills

  • Information on hybrid turf

  • Updates on testing methods, construction techniques and more.

The publication, also used as the textbook for those taking the Certified Field Builder (CFB) exam, will be available in both electronic form and hard copy, meaning you will be able to access the information any way you want.

Copies of the publication will be available at the 2017 Technical Meeting in New Orleans.

Reminder: ASBA's First-Ever Pickleball Manual is Now Available

ASBA’s new book, Pickleball Courts: A Construction & Maintenance Manual, is available now. This publication, written jointly by ASBA and the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA), is the first-ever technical publication for this emerging sport. It has been selling well – an indicator of the growing market for information on pickleball.
This book is also available in electronic form. Order yours today!

ASBA Position Papers: Read All About It

ASBA publishes a series of Position Papers, which are one-page technical documents on subjects of interest to those in the industry.

ASBA's Position Papers can be found on the website,, on the page for each division. They can be downloaded and printed out free of charge. They can be an invaluable source of information to members as well as to others in the industry. DETAILS

ASBA's Certificate of Distinction Program: Are You Aware of It?

ASBA currently offers two Certificates of Distinction, one for Design Professionals and one for Supplier Companies.

Both differ from certification in that they do not require members to pass a test, nor are they a credential that is awarded. However, they do recognize commitment and dedication to the Association and the industry.

The Design Professional Certificate of Distinction program provides professionals a distinction by illustrating the individual’s commitment and dedication to the tennis, track, fields and indoor facility construction industry through involvement with ASBA and related organizations and the completion of built projects.

The Supplier Certificate of Distinction program is designed to recognize those ASBA Supplier Division Member Companies that contribute to and share in the betterment of the ASBA. ASBA Supplier Division Member Companies that meet and/or exceed the participation goals and requirements will receive this recognition, which must be renewed on an annual basis and ASBA Supplier Division Member Companies must meet the minimum total qualifying point requirement every year to maintain their recognition.

To learn more about each Certificate of Distinction program, go to ASBA’s website,

May We Quote You?

One of ASBA’s most important programs is its technical articles, which are written for trade magazines in various segments of the industry, including tennis, track, indoor and fields facilities. We are always looking for our members to comment on, and be quoted in these articles. This is an excellent chance to help raise ASBA’s profile, and in an ancillary capacity, to increase visibility for your company. If you would like to be quoted in these articles, please send an e-mail to Mary Helen Sprecher at

Please indicate your area(s) of expertise: Tennis, Track, Indoor, Fields so that we do not bother you with excess e-mail. You can be added to more than one mailing list if you wish.

If you have previously sent Mary Helen an e-mail asking to be added to her e-mail list, you do not need to request again. However, if your e-mail has changed and you have not been receiving questions, please contact her with your current e-mail address.

Got Your Certification? Help Keep it up by Writing Technical Articles for Newsline

ASBA offers its Certified Builders two options for keeping their designation current. The first is the option to take the exam again. The second, however, includes an opportunity to benefit the industry itself: recertification by acquiring continuing education points. This includes writing technical articles for Newsline. DETAILS

NCAA Amends Rule 1-1.6 on Cones and Curbing

The NCAA Men's and Women's Track and Field Rules Committee and the Playing Rules Oversight Panel have approved an amendment to Rule 1-1.6 in the 2017 and 2018 NCAA Cross Country/Track and Field Rules Book. The amendment states:

"Beginning Dec. 1, 2018, all newly constructed or resurfaced indoor tracks shall be surveyed for a curb and shall have a regulation curb in place for competition."

This amendment replaces the current rule which required all indoor facilities to have a curb beginning Dec. 1, 2018.

Should you have questions regarding this decision, please contact Rachel Seewald at the NCAA national office.
