APT's Laykold Masters Chosen for Rooftop Court

Laykold Masters 8mm cushion court was the surface of choice for a recent rooftop basketball court installation at Barry Farms Recreation Center. After months of researching the perfect rooftop basketball court, the District of Columbia selected Advanced Polymer Technology's (APT) Laykold Masters 8 as the surface of choice. Leading DC's Parks Department to their decision was the extreme shock absorption from the Laykold Masters 8mm shock pad at 26%. Second would be a secondary waterproofing capability which is built into all of the Laykold Masters shock pad products and lastly, the Laykold Masters 8 system's ability to span construction joints and cracks by being installed as a completely floating surface. The surfaces capabilities include a 5-year warranty, up to 60% force reduction and equal play to a hard court, all making the Laykold Masters surfaces a no-brainer for cities, counties and homeowners alike.

Penn Relays Choose Rekortan, Once Again in 2015

The decision was made by the University of Pennsylvania to perform a complete track renovation after the 2015 events at Franklin Field. Advanced Polymer Technology’s (APT) Rekortan running track was an easy choice as it simply outlasts the competition.

Rekortan has been the official surface of the Penn Relays since 1988. According to Gary Wilson, Director of Sales at APT, Rekortan was selected once again because of its superior characteristics of speed and longevity.

Rekortan’s superior reputation is known around the world by world class athletes.

David DiGeronimo Joins AstroTurf

AstroTurf is pleased to announce a strong addition to its lineup of experienced personnel. David DiGeronimo has been hired as a Product Manager to cultivate the market for the company’s new Golden Series product line. He will be responsible to drive sales for this innovative, rubber-free line of turf systems.

Having been raised in the business, David’s hands-on industry experience dates back 15 years to his college summers, when he built fields. After graduating with a BS from the University of Worcester, David received a certification of Applied Project Management from Villanova University. David has gained a wide range of experience working for firms across the business of athletic field building – from landscape architecture firms to turf manufacturers to installation companies. His overarching industry knowledge will be invaluable to AstroTurf.

David lives in California with his wife, Elizabeth, and young daughter, Ila Jane.

Rusty Russell Retires from Astroturf

AstroTurf announces with sadness that Rusty Russell retired at the end of May.

After a long career coaching football at colleges across the country, Rusty Russell began his turf career at FieldTurf, eventually moving to AstroTurf in 2010. The strategic sales methods he employed were impressive. AstroTurf owes many of its high profile football accounts to his efforts, including the Citrus Bowl, the Liberty Bowl, Mississippi State, University of Tennessee, Auburn, University of South Carolina, and others.

His shoes will be difficult to fill, but AstroTurf wishes him well!

Blazer Manufacturing Has New Ownership

Kirk Diers and Brent Ogle have acquired sports equipment manufacturer, Blazer Manufacturing. The new ownership team has retained all the employees and has placed emphasis on new growth with the continued quality manufacturing that has kept customers coming back for 40 years. BSC Group Names David N. Hayes, PE New President and CEO

The BSC Companies, Inc. board of directors voted unanimously to name David N. Hayes, PE, LEED AP as the next President of BSC Companies, Inc., the parent firm of BSC Group and Geonetics. Hayes will also assume the position of Chief Executive Officer. Formerly the Executive Vice President of BSC, David will succeed outgoing President Charles Kalauskas, PE who has led the firm’s engineering consulting business since 2012. Hayes will begin his role immediately, having responsibility for the operational and financial management of BSC Group and its affiliate. Kalauskas, who has been with BSC since 1981, will remain available to assist in the transition as Chairman of the Board, a role he is assuming from the firm’s Chairman and former President (1990 to 2012) Richard Long.

Hayes joined BSC in 1987 and has worked with Kalauskas and Long for more than 25 years. Hayes is a registered Professional Engineer in Massachusetts, holds an MBA from Boston University and a BA in Mathematics and Engineering from Trinity College, Dublin University, Ireland. In December 2012, Hayes was re-elected to his second, three-year term on the MassEcon Board of Directors—the Commonwealth’s private sector partner in promoting Massachusetts as the premier choice for business growth.

PanAm and ParaPan Games to be played on DecoTurf

California Sports Surfaces is pleased to announce that our DecoTurf cushioned acrylic system has been chosen for use at the 2015 PanAm Games and the 2015 ParaPan Games, both to take place in Toronto this July.

The PanAm Games tennis tournament will take place on the courts of the Rexall Centre, also home to the Rogers Cup, on the grounds of York University from July 10-26th. The wheelchair tennis tournament of the ParaPan Games will take place on the newly constructed courts at University of Toronto-Scarborough from August 7-10th.

California Sports Surfaces chosen for USTA National Campus

California Sports Surfaces awarded first Two-Star ITF Recognized courts in the USA

Three outdoor acrylic courts in Florida, USA have been awarded Two-Star ITF Recognition.

Two courts at Palm Beach Atlantic University were tested against the ITF recommendations for evenness, slope, planarity, dimensions and court pace rating, and gained Two-Star ITF Recognition which is an acknowledgement of high-quality installation. The DecoColor Cat 3 surface was supplied by California Sports Surfaces®, a company well-established in the court surface industry and a long-standing member of the ITF Foundation. The courts were installed by ProCourts in conjunction with Global Sports & Tennis Design Group design team.

One court at Fisher Island Racquet Club also obtained Two-Star ITF Recognition using DecoTurf Select, supplied by California Sports Surfaces®. This court was installed by Agile Tennis Courts.

Classic Turf Company Receives Project Award of Excellence from the Post-Tensioning Institute

Classic Turf Company was given the Award of Excellence in the ‘Slab-On-Ground’ category for the 2015 Post-Tensioning Institute Project Awards. This prestigious award is given every two years to a project that demonstrates excellence in post-tensioning applications.

“It gives me great pleasure to announce that Classic Turf Company’s entry, the Sky View Parc Tennis Facility, has been chosen as the recipient for the Award of Excellence in the ‘Slab-On-Ground’ category for the 2015 Post-Tensioning Institute Project Awards. This award is given every two years to a project that demonstrates excellence in post-tensioning applications. The Award of Excellence is an honor that serves to recognize the best in our industry.” says Theodore L. Neff the Executive Director of the Post-Tensioning Institute. In choosing the recipient, several things are considered, including: creativity, innovation, ingenuity, cost-effectiveness, functionality, constructability, and aesthetics.

The Skyview Parc Project, a 3.5-acre rooftop project, is located in Flushing, New York across the river from the US Tennis Center. The court portion of the project consisted of a highly customized structural post tension concrete tennis and multi-purpose courts situated on top of a prefabricated garage structure. Specialized fence anchors and light pole footings were integral to the court structure. The 10mm Classic Turf Cushioned Sports Surface was installed on the concrete slab for the finished playing surface.

The attention to details and construction logistics required for the Skyview Parc project was critical to the success of the installation and Classic Turf performed with excellence.

Chris Banner Joins Ecore as International Sales Manager

Ecore Issues Environmental Product Declarations for 12 Products

Ecore International, a company that transforms reclaimed waste into unique performance surfaces that make people’s lives better, recently demonstrated its commitment to sustainability by issuing Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for twelve products.

An EPD is a verified document that reports environmental data of products based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and other information in accordance with the international standard ISO 14025. Ecore’s EPDs were prepared by SCS Global Services and based on the NSF International Product Category Rule (PCR) for Flooring: Carpet, Resilient, Laminate, Ceramic and Wood. Several Ecore products have gone through the rigorous EPD process, which includes a comprehensive life cycle assessment.

Ecore has conducted EPDs for Forest rx, Terrain rx, UltraTile®, ECOmax, Performance, ECOrx, ECOfit, PlayGuard, Everlast Basic Rolls & Tiles, ECOsurfaces, QT, and ECOsilence.

Following completion, Ecore’s EPDs were externally verified by FFK LTD as conforming to the requirements of ISO 14025:2006 and ISO 21930:2007. This verification meets LEEDv4 requirements. Ecore considers these Environmental Product Declarations a useful tool in providing transparent, comparable, and authenticated information with regards to environmental performance of its products.

SSI Expands Track & Field Presence in Southeast United States

Two small southern colleges—Berry College (NCAA Div. III) in Mt. Berry, GA and the University of Montevallo (NCAA Div. II) in Montevallo, AL—are going big time with sparkling new track and field facilities that have been outfitted exclusively with competition equipment made by Sportsfield Specialties Inc. (SSI). Thanks greatly to SSI’s reputation for product quality, timely delivery, and personalized customer service; it was an easy decision for college officials and the builder, Sports Turf Company of Whitesburg, GA, to turn to the upstate NY company for all the essential track and field equipment at the new on-campus venues.

On both projects the point person for SSI was Brian Jaeger, Southeast Regional Sales Manager, who worked closely with Dan Wright, CFB of Sports Turf and met often with the track and field coaches at both schools. Jaeger, who is based in Atlanta, counseled both coaches on the functionality and durability of SSI track and field equipment.

In equipping the new Montevallo facility for the 2015 season, SSI provided one dual pad hammer and discus cage with separate circles for both, one shot put toe board and ring, eight comboxes (for in-ground electrical connections), six takeoff boards, and one steeplechase pit with a single hurdle for the water pit. The season was capped off when Montevallo showed off its new venue as host of the Peach Belt Conference Championships.

At Berry, the new track and field venue will mean the expansion of what has been strictly a cross-country running program and enable full participation in track and field by both men’s and women teams in the spring of 2016. The lineup of equipment provided by SSI includes one dual pad hammer and discus cage with separate circles for both, two shot put toe boards and rings, four comboxes, four pole vault boxes, eight takeoff boards, one steeplechase pit with cover and four stationary hurdles including one for the water pit.

“These projects give SSI track and field equipment important visibility in the southeastern United States where the sport is especially robust,” said David Moxley, Director of New Construction Sales for SSI.

New IAAF Class 2 Track certified for Stockmeier Urethanes

Verde Design Kezar Stadium Track

Verde Design Inc., of Santa Clara, CA recently completed renovation efforts for the track at historic Kezar stadium located within Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department sponsored the project.

The project included the expansion and renovation of Kezar Track to a nine-lane NFHS track. The running surface is a Mondo Super X 720 13.5 MM and replaces the original 20+ year old Mondo track.

The track was re-graded and repaved to allow for a new 1% maximum cross slope to be developed. New ACO perimeter trench drains, Sportsfield Specialties long and triple jump pits with sand catchers, football goal posts, soccer goals and a dual shot put throwing area were included in the project.

New ADA improvements, drinking fountains and perimeter walkways rounded out the improvements. Robert A. Bothman was the General Contractor.
