Summer Time!

Dan Wright, CFB

ASBA Chairman

It’s that time of year again….the one that we try to prepare for during the off-season…the one that makes or breaks the year for many of us: SUMMER.

December seems like a long way off, but it’s never too early to start planning. Be sure to mark your calendars for December 4-8 for ASBA’s 2015 Technical Meeting at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in Scottsdale, Arizona. We are in the midst of ASBA’s 50th anniversary and we’ll be toasting our success together at this year’s Technical Meeting. A special task force has been created to work on making this a not-to-miss event. Watch your mail and email boxes in the coming months for hints of things to come, but to truly experience the magic, you’ll need to be in Scottsdale in December.

The ASBA Board of Directors will be meeting in mid-July for its annual summer meeting. There are standard pieces of business on the agenda, but most of this year’s meeting is being dedicated to strategic planning for the Association. We’ve spent most of the year gearing up for a facilitated retreat where the ASBA leadership will review data collected through the Spring member survey (thanks to all of you who contributed toward a tremendous response rate from our membership); consider trends in sports and sports construction, and evaluate opportunities for ASBA in the coming months and years. Your leadership and staff support this effort and will have all of our members’ interests in mind as we strategize and plan. We’ll report back later this summer with the results and plans.

One project completed this Spring was the development of the ASBA Asphalt Guideline. After months of work with our task force, a consultant, and communications with other trade associations, the Asphalt Guideline is complete and available via the ASBA website. If you have not yet reviewed the document, please do. We hope this will be a resource to each of our builders as you work with owners and asphalt suppliers. We will be offering facilitated sessions at the Technical Meeting in December to explain the Guidelines and collect your feedback.

The Joint Editorial Board has been hard at work on the latest revision (8th) of Tennis Courts: A Construction and Maintenance Manual. The new manual is readying for print as I write this, and should be in circulation by July. Many thanks to the volunteers who contributed their time on this publication from both ASBA and USTA.

I’m looking forward to seeing all of you in Scottsdale to celebrate what we’ve accomplished as an industry over the past 50 years!

Have a great summer!

Dan Wright, CFB
