ASBA Continues to Thrive

Obviously fields, tracks, and courts tend to take a low priority when there is no infrastructure. Precious funds are being redirected, school budgets are being cut, and personal spending has certainly taken a downturn. I think we have all seen the importance of the Association’s strength with respect to the support and dispersion of information to help our businesses become stronger. It is gratifying to see our membership and participation increase and the efforts of everyone in clearing away misinformation, promoting our construction manuals and, gaining recognition through our Certified Builder programs. DETAILS

USTA Court Surface Testing

The USTA started testing court surfaces in 2002 using the Tortus equipment to test the friction values of tennis court surfaces. Due to the limitations of the Tortus, the USTA Technical Department developed its own court testing device in accordance with International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) test principles (the ITF establishes the parameters for court surface values.) This new equipment, which utilizes a pneumatic cannon and high speed camera, tests both the coefficient of friction and coefficient of restitution of the court surface and provides a court pace rating (CPR) value. The new testing method has proven to be more accurate and correlates better with player perception. DETAILS

As the economy continues its seismic shifts, the sports facility construction industry is scrambling to keep up. Tennis court contractors were quoted in the November/December 2010 issue of Racquet Sports Industry Magazine* as saying their workflow had been disrupted in two ways. A shortage of jobs was no surprise, but the increase in competition was unforeseen. DETAILS
