FROM THE  CHAIR

Back in the Great Outdoors

By the time you read this message, I’m hoping that we’re all working outdoors again, after the last blast of winter that many of us experienced in mid-March.

ASBA has kept many of us busy in Q1 with the Winter Meeting in Mexico in February, followed by our first Regional Meeting in New York in early March. I’m pleased to report that both events were successful and well-attended.

MEETINGS

ASBA Returns to New Orleans for Technical Meeting

ASBA is coming back to The Big Easy. That’s right, our 2017 Technical Meeting will be in New Orleans, Louisiana, one of ASBA’s favorite places. And as the Association has grown (along with its meetings), it is going to have a new home, the Hyatt Regency New Orleans.

This meeting, scheduled for December 1-5, 2017, will have all you’ve come to expect. DETAILS

ASBA’s Regional Meeting: Bringing the Meeting to the Members

ASBA’s first Regional Meeting this year, held in New York City, was an overwhelming success. The event, which took place March 8-9, 2017, at the Marriott New York LaGuardia Airport, was well-attended and well-received. DETAILS

ASBA Goes South of the Border

ASBA ventured south of the border and down to Mexico for its 2017 Winter Meeting. The meeting, held February 24-26, 2017, at the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort in Riviera Maya, served two purposes: it provided an excellent chance to get work done, plus it was a great mid-winter escape.

ASBA members worked on projects and publications, as well as put in serious time to map out the groundwork for the upcoming Technical Meeting (more on that in this newsletter.) Work sessions were held in the morning, leaving afternoons free for catching up with colleagues, sightseeing or unwinding during the slow season. ASBA also hosted tennis and golf events for attendees and their guests – something else you’ll find covered in these pages. Attendees enjoyed off-property excursions including sightseeing, shopping and more. Accella Polyurethane Systems also sponsored a boat trip that included lunch, snorkeling, swimming and a number of fun activities.

The meeting was held with some outstanding scenery – on one of the most gorgeous beaches in the Mexican Caribbean at an all-inclusive five-star beachfront property with pools, a plentitude of restaurants, a spa, water sports and more. Oh, and did we mention the spectacular beach had white sand, crystal-clear water and a coral reef?

If you missed this one, don’t kick yourself too hard – ASBA has some other great events on the books. The next Winter Meeting, for example, will be held February 23-25, 2018, at the Meritage Resort and Spa in Napa, California. And in December of 2017, the Technical Meeting returns to New Orleans, Louisiana, one of ASBA’s favorite places. Details on both these meetings will be coming soon.

Winter Meeting Tennis: Serving Up the Competitive Spirit - and the Fun

During the course of the Winter Meeting in at the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico, a number of members and guests carved out time to compete in the ASBA’s Tennis Tournament.

California Sports Surfaces sponsored the event, which drew a large number of participants. When the dust settled, the winners were as follows:

Group A – Chris Allen & Randy Futty
Group B – Tracy Lynch & Carolyn Pettit

Itching for some payback? Start practicing new. Tennis competition will be available at the Technical Meeting in New Orleans this December!

ON THE BOOKSHELF

Coming Soon: A New Fields Manual

One of ASBA’s biggest-selling publications, Sports Fields: A Construction & Maintenance Manual, is in the works! The committee has been hard at work on the book, and it’s in the final stages of development.

  • Look for the new publication to have information on:

  • An update on the synthetic fields controversy

  • Information on alternative infills

  • Information on hybrid turf

  • Updates on testing methods, construction techniques and more.

The publication, also used as the textbook for those taking the Certified Field Builder (CFB) exam, will be available in both electronic form and hard copy, meaning you will be able to access the information any way you want.

Advertising Opportunities

If you would like to advertise in the new fields manual, click here.

Copies of the publication will be available at the 2017 Technical Meeting in New Orleans.

New Courts & Recreation Division for ASBA Up and Running

At its December Technical Meeting, ASBA announced the transformation of its Indoor Division into a new "Courts & Recreation" Division. ASBA’s website has been redesigned to incorporate the newest division and serve as a resource for potential members and end-users.

The Courts & Recreation Division will incorporate both indoor and outdoor versions of such sports as basketball, volleyball, futsal, pickleball, etc. Construction guidelines have been developed for pickleball courts in collaboration with the USA Pickleball Association. The goal is to provide a source of education and networking for members currently involved in designing and building these projects; and for consumers who are seeking such professionals to engage in such projects.

Members interested in being involved in the restructuring of this division should contact Executive Director Fred Stringfellow at fred@stringfellowgroup.net to express interest. We are particularly interested in members who have experience building some of the venues and surfaces being incorporated into this division such as outdoor basketball courts, pickleball courts, etc. and those who have relationships with the governing bodies of these respective sports.
