Advanced Polymer Technology (APT) Introduces Laykold Masters

Laykold Masters is an exciting new line of premium quality, all-weather, tennis and athletic surfaces. Designed by APT with significant improvements to several physical properties, Laykold Masters offers a fresh new family of ultra high-performance surfaces that include the Masters Color; Masters Ultra 2 & 3; Masters 5, 8, Float & Indoor; and Masters Montreal & Rome. ALL Laykold Masters systems are backed by APT with a 5-year warranty.

Jim Sacco, APT’s director of North American Operations, says “APT is a chemical company that solves industry problems though innovation. NuSurf and ColorFlex are great examples. Those two products were so successful that I decided to dedicate a full time chemist to Laykold a few years back.” This decision has proven to be very beneficial for the Laykold trademark.

Wesley Baum, APT’s Head Laykold Chemist, was in charge of development for Laykold Masters. Wes states “I started working on a spray cushion product with enhanced force reduction properties several years ago and it just snowballed. A few years later, APT has a very complimentary product line to offer Laykold customers.”

“I couldn’t be happier” states Jeff Bryant, National Director of Laykold & Omnicourt Sales. “APT continues to grow its business organically. Team Laykold has eight Traditional Laykold systems, nine Laykold Masters systems and Omnicourt surfaces to offer their customers. That’s a very comprehensive product line to come from and be supported by a single source!”

In the market place, Laykold Masters Systems have been recently featured at tennis showcases and events across the globe including Chicago, New York City, Rome, and Tokyo. Most recently, in celebration of World Tennis Day, Laykold Masters was the surface of choice at the BNP Paribas Showdown in Madison Square Garden. The Laykold Masters logo was proudly displayed on the court surface.

Back in December 2014, a Laykold Masters all-weather basketball court was installed at the private residence of an NBA All-Star in Miami, Florida. The professional athlete wanted the best surface available and compared the benefits of his Laykold Masters selection. His choice was the Laykold Masters 8 which offers 21% force reduction, a 5 year warranty, uniform playing characteristics, and the UV resistance custom colors of his beloved Marquette University Golden Eagles. The success of this install, combined with the customer’s satisfaction, has garnered recent media attention.

LSI Industries Illuminates Indoor Tennis Facility with Indirect LED

As part of a $5 million expansion and renovation program, the Fort Collins Country Club constructed three new indoor tennis courts to complement their existing five outdoor courts. The facility chose to use the new S x S LED indirect lighting system from LSI to illuminate the courts. The average light levels provided by the S x S system as designed for this facility are over 100 foot-candles, with exceptional uniformity. SFA|SFM Collaborates With Connor Sports

With a new sports tourism center set to open in the third-largest tourism destination in America, SFA|SFM is not pulling any punches when it comes to athlete safety. Every detail can be a factor in minimizing preventable athletic injury, and SFA|SFM is paying attention to the largest, yet frequently overlooked detail—the floor.

The gymnasium floor is the most important investment and a critical differentiator of athletic equipment, yet it is often overlooked. The physical demands of athletic activities place strain and stress on athletes’ ankles, knees and hip joints and proper quality flooring can help to minimize the stress, strain and fatigue that come from constant running and jumping. In an effort to maintain athlete safety, the Sports Facilities Advisory and Sports Facilities Management (SFA|SFM) will collaborate with Connor Sports for the floor installation in SFA|SFM’s recent project, the Myrtle Beach Sports Center in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

As youth sports and sport tourism have become increasingly organized and competitive, they have not only created a wealth of economic development opportunities through sporting events with visiting teams and competitors filling hotel local rooms—one baseball tournament in Oregon is expected to generate an estimated economic impact of $83,000 —but they have also created a need for more and better-quality venues for both local teams and travel tournaments for serious athletes looking to compete. But with the increased competition comes a higher risk for serious injury—according to a Safe Kids Worldwide survey of emergency room visits, more than a million times a year—or about every 25 seconds—a young athlete visits a hospital emergency room for a sports-related injury.

But officials at Connor Sports maintain that keeping athletes as free from injury as possible is a direct result of the design and performance of the sub-floor system. While proper flooring does not guarantee that an athlete won’t be injured, it can greatly reduce the risk in sports where multiple athletes play in close proximity to each other, such as volleyball and basketball. The goal is for all athletes to experience the same benefits of buoyancy, making a resilient sub-floor beneath the hardwood floor the key to controlling the “trampoline effect” that naturally takes place, per Doug Grove, National Sales Manager at Connor Sports.

“The amount of flexion of the floor directly beneath the athletes’ feet plays a strong role in preventing athletic injuries. A floor must be able to ‘give’ when an athlete jumps or falls. Too little give may result in immediate injuries upon impact, while too much give leads to an unstable floor and can feel like one is running on sand; both situations can compound an athlete’s risk of injury,” said Grove.

SFA|SFM chose to work with Connor Sports in the construction of the Myrtle Beach Sports Center due to the company’s proven track record and commitment to athlete safety. Founded in 1872, Connor Sports provides a complete line of flooring systems which have been tested and approved by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) study center, and has built hardwood courts for 14 NBA teams.

Since 2005, the company has been the official playing surface of the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Final Four and Division I regional sites. Connor Sports also sits on the Board of Directors for FIBA, an association of national organizations which governs international competition in basketball.

“The Myrtle Beach Sports Center is located in one of the largest tourism destinations in the country, and the facility has already attracted a record number of event contracts before the doors have even opened,” said SFA|SFM CEO Dev Pathik. “As such, ensuring the safety of every athlete who plays in the facility was a priority that required the assistance of a company with only the highest standards.”

Set to open in March, the Myrtle Beach Sports Center was nearly sold out for its first six months by last November, and will include 100,000 square feet of year-round tournament and events space. The center offers eight high school basketball courts or 16 volleyball courts with full-length retractable curtains. The Coastal South Carolina sports facility also has 70,000 square feet of free-space area designed to host mat sports, table tennis, pickleball, trade shows, and many other types of events. SFA|SFM Vice facilities are projecting 15 to 18 million unique visitors in 2015, which will mean that Americans are participating in activities in safe environments for between 25–30 million hours—a result which satisfies SFA|SFM’s mission of providing opportunities for people to make connections, build teamwork, and improve their health—and right within in their own community.

SSI Builds Its Largest Modular Dugout For Northern Virginia Baseball Facility

When the in-house engineers at Sportsfield Specialties Inc. (SSI) were told that Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, VA wanted a new 58-foot long home dugout for the school’s on-campus baseball facility, they knew they had a challenge on their hands. The reason: SSI had never made an enclosed modular dugout at its Delhi, NY factory that was longer than 52 feet. That’s because its powder coat oven, despite being one of the largest on the east coast of the United States, can’t accommodate a structure over 52 feet long.

As part of the new home dugout, Bishop O’Connell officials requested that it include a storage closet on the right field end of the structure. To solve the resulting length issue, SSI designed a two-piece unit consisting of a 52-foot dugout and a separate 6-foot closet that would be bolted to the dugout portion during the in-site installation process. Also as requested, the new home dugout was built with full electric capability. Meanwhile, the 48-foot visitor’s dugout (no storage closet) was never a design or manufacturing issue.

Along with the two dugouts, SSI will supply for both two-tier aluminum benches and aluminum cubbies that will be installed on-site. In addition, SSI will provide and install 25-foot high netting systems along the first and third baseline seating areas to control foul balls. The netting systems will feature the exclusive SSI safety system known as StormGuard®, which automatically releases the net to take stress off the support poles during extreme weather such as high winds, ice, and heavy snow.

The baseball facility at Bishop O’Connell sees plenty of action since it is also serves as the home field for Marymount University, an NCAA Div. III school nearby in Arlington. that competes in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC).
