Tennis Industry Magazine Recognizes Randy Futty, Court One as "Champions of Tennis"

The ASBA 2016 Technical Meeting was the setting for the presentation of two awards from Tennis Industry Magazine. The magazine, the largest business-to-business tennis publication in the United States, presents its annual Champions of Tennis awards, honoring those who serve the sport in various capacities.

This year’s Tennis Industry Service Award was presented to Randy Futty of California Sports Surfaces. TI editorial director, Peter Francesconi, noted, “When it comes to tennis courts, it’s hard to find someone with more knowledge than Randy Futty. Whether tackling the challenges of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center or revitalizing school courts in a small town, Futty brings a passion to this sport few can match. That’s a key reason he’s our 2016 Tennis Industry Service Award winner.”

Futty has also put in volunteer time to make the industry better, including sitting on ASBA’s board for more than a decade, as well as serving on and chairing the USTA Technical Committee. He presently serves on the USTA Public Parks Committee and has volunteered with Special Olympics in Virginia, where he lives.

“I learned early on that you need to give back,” Futty says. “Volunteering—and advocacy for this game and this industry—is important at all levels.”

The Tennis Builder/Contractor of the Year Award was presented to Court One. Court One, which has offices in both Raleigh and Salisbury, North Carolina, has been engaged in the business of building courts for more than 30 years and covers a three-state area. The company also has three CTCBs on staff (including its president, Gerry Wright).

The company specializes in both reconstruction and renovation and its projects have been honored by both the ASBA and the USTA.

In addition, Court One remains heavily involved in the industry itself. Wright has served as chairman of the ASBA and remains active in the organization, attending meetings and speaking.
Wright attributes the success of his company to its ability to maintain open lines of communication with its customers.

“It’s important to understand who you’re talking to and what they want,” Wright says. “You need to make every effort to deliver a high degree of professionalism at a fair price.”
