Good Things Are Happening with ASBA

Pete Smith, CTCB

ASBA Chairman

Participating in last month’s Technical Meeting in Amelia Island, Florida, with more than 600 of our fellow members (another new record) prompted an interesting board discussion: the growth of ASBA and the Technical Meeting. We have been enjoying a great model for the Technical Meeting where we gather every December in an intimate and relaxed setting to network and discuss ways to “build it right.” Will we lose that dynamic if we continue to grow the meeting? It provided for interesting discussion and introspection.

ASBA’s mission is to promote the highest standards of design, construction and maintenance by developing and disseminating current and accurate technical information; promoting the interests of builders of sports facilities; and providing a forum to gather and exchange ideas and information to improve sports facility construction and maintenance. Our response….yes, we will continue to foster growth for our members and the industry. It’s our mission and we owe it to the industry.

To that end, we unveiled some exciting new plans last month at the Technical Meeting during our Annual Business Meeting:

  • The transformation of our Indoor Division into a new “Courts & Recreation” Division. The Courts & Recreation Division will incorporate both indoor and outdoor versions of such sports as basketball, volleyball, pickleball, etc. The goal is to provide a source of education and networking for members currently involved in designing and building these projects; and for consumers who are seeking such professionals to engage in such projects. Members interested in being involved in the restructuring of this division should contact Executive Director Fred Stringfellow at fred@stringfellowgroup.net to express interest. We need your involvement. READ MORE ABOUT THIS NEW DIVISION HERE.

  • Our first “Regional Meeting” will be held March 8-9 in the NYC Metro area. In an effort to move our meetings outside of the sunbelt to areas where we have high concentrations of members and potential members we have chosen the NYC Metro area for our rollout of this new program. It will be a condensed 2-day meeting focused on building-related topics, targeted at crew chiefs, superintendents, installers, foremen and project managers – to name a few titles. We’re offering this in early March, before the busy building season begins in the Northeast and hope that it will serve as a valuable off-season training opportunity for your employees. In addition to structured “classroom” training and roundtables, we’ll be organizing guided tours of Citifield and the National Tennis Center – both located very close to the meeting site. Registration is now open. READ MORE ABOUT THIS NEW MEETING HERE.

Good things are happening within your association. Be part of this exciting transformation. I hope to see many of you next month in Riviera Maya, Mexico for the Winter Meeting, February 24-26. Best wishes for a Happy and Prosperous 2017!
