FROM THE  CHAIR

Here's to 50 More Years

Spending time last month with more than 550 of my fellow association colleagues in Scottsdale, Arizona, to celebrate ASBA’s 50th Anniversary was an amazing experience. To acknowledge and commemorate how much this organization and its loyal members have accomplished in the past five decades was momentous. My father, who served as Chairman of ASBA during the early years of the Association, would have been proud to see ASBA where it is today. DETAILS

MEETINGS

Destination: Punta Cana - ASBA Winter Meeting 2016

When you want to do some work on Association projects while getting away from winter weather, you can’t do much better than to go to a place called Paradisus.

The 2016 ASBA Winter Meeting, to be held February 19-21, will take place in the Dominican Republic at the Paradisus Palma Real Resort. The meeting will offer the chance to take care of all the business that we all wish we had time for … DETAILS

ASBA Technical Meeting 2015, Scottsdale, Arizona

Expectations: Exceeded.

There was really no other way to describe the 2015 Technical Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona. The event, held at the Fairmont Princess, had spectacular weather, the highest registration ASBA has ever recorded, excellent programming, a sold-out trade show – and the unexpected bonus of a festival of holiday lights that turned the hotel grounds into a wonderland at night. DETAILS

Technical Meeting Programming: See What You Missed

This year’s Technical Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona, was one of the best-attended ever. An advantage to this: even more people were able to take advantage of the outstanding technical programming.

Sessions were offered in each time frame during the two days of programming, addressing various divisions: Tennis, Track, Fields and Indoor. In addition, there was a track of what were known as General topic programs, often relating to valuable information in business management, sales, estimating and even preparation for ASBA’s certification exams. Technical Meeting Golf Tournament Recap

Good: Golfing

Better: Golfing in Scottsdale, Arizona, while the rest of the world was working

Best: Golfing in Arizona at the TPC Scottsdale - Stadium Course, home of the Waste Management Open (and being able to brag about the experience later.)

This year’s Technical Meeting Golf Tournament exceeded expectations. The event, sponsored by Liberty Tire Recycling, was a complete sell-out. Participants enjoyed the experience of a spectacular course, as well as the sight of the venue being readied for its big event, scheduled for February.

When the dust settled, the following were named winners of the event (ASBA’s golf tournament, not the Waste Management Open):

Foursome: Jake Newkerk, Sportsfield Specialties, Inc.; Allen Waterman, AWP Enterprises, LLC; Sean Clark, Sportsfield Specialties, Inc.; Wayne Oliver, Sportsfield Specialties, Inc. Score – 57

Longest Drive: Women: Vicki Sullivan; Man: Mike Burke, NGI Sports

Closest to the Pin: Jake Newkerk, Sportsfield Specialties, Inc. (hole 16) and Matt Cross (hole 4.)

Game, Set, Match: The Technical Meeting's Tennis Tournament

The 2015 Technical Meeting Tennis Tournament, sponsored by Har-Tru Sports, was held at the beautiful DC Ranch Tennis Center in Scottsdale. The ranch feature incredible views of the desert and the surrounding rocky hills and mountains.

A total of 19 attendees participated in the event which featured five rounds of round robin play followed by two rounds of playoffs. When the dust settled, the Blue Group was won by Tom Derosa (DeRosa Sports Construction, inc.) and Greg Duffy (Super Seal Sealcoating Co.), who defeated Randy Futty (California Sports Surfaces) and Pete Francesconi (Tennis Industry Magazine) in a hard-fought match that came down to the final point.

In the Red Group, Chuck Davis (Davis Tennis Courts, LLC) and Pat Hanssen (Har-Tru Sports) finished on top, defeating finalists Ron Young (Putterman Athletics) and George Tavares (Coatings, Inc.).

Congratulations to all the winners (and finalists) but as everyone noted, with views like that, it was hard to come out as anything but a winner.

In addition, the blog will cover association interests, members’ activities and more.

“ASBA is very pleased that we are able to highlight even more technical news,” noted Dan Wright, CFB, ASBA’s chairman. “We think readers will enjoy being kept up on what’s going on not only with professional sports facilities but with behind-the-scenes information. We’re also looking forward to being able to highlight some of our programs, publications and activities for readers.”

ASBA: The Industry's Experts

One strong benefit of ASBA membership is the fact that ASBA is recognized as a technical leader in the industry. Want proof? Articles written on behalf of ASBA, and quoting ASBA members, are everywhere. Just as an example, you’ll find ASBA’s articles in the following publications:

Recently, ASBA introduced its Design Professional Certificate of Distinction Program.
