Mateflex
Resurfaces Rooftop Tennis Courts
and Track at NYU

Mateflex
recently completed a rooftop
renovation for New York
University at their Coles Sports
and Recreation Center. The staff
at NYU was looking for a
cost-effective solution to
improve their aging rooftop
facilities. The existing surface
had deteriorated to the point
where it became a safety hazard
and resulted in the courts
having to be closed for several
years. Mateflex worked closely
with their local representative
to come up with a solution to
recreate NYU’s six-bank tennis
court with a running track
around it utilizing their school
colors that turned a problem
area into a unique multi-use
space. When the base repairs
were complete, Mateflex
installed over 51,000 square
feet of their Mateflex II tiles
on this rooftop in Manhattan.
Mateflex II is specifically
engineered from the ground up
for tennis play. A Mateflex
surface combines the comfort and
resiliency of a soft court with
the durability and low
maintenance of a hard court. One
of the deciding factors when
choosing a surface for this
rooftop project was the unique
design of the Mateflex surface
which allows it to be fastened
around the outside perimeter of
the court to the subsurface.
This is done for several
practical reasons:
-
To prevent physical or thermal movement of the
surface throughout its long service life.
-
To allow the surface to be trimmed close to the
side-stops, backstops and net posts without leaving excessive space
for thermal expansion.
-
To maintain accurate playing line dimensions that
will not vary due to temperature.
-
To provide a continuous playing surface – even on
large multiple court layouts - without any breaks.
-
To prevent vandals from lifting and damaging the
edge of the court.
Mateflex is
the oldest U.S. modular tile
manufacturer, operating
continuously in the same
location since 1974.

Releases Statement on "Changing
a Specification"
An argument for a specification “change”
before or after a bid is won is often accompanied by a seemingly
“legitimate” sounding reason. However, it will often have an
ulterior motive behind it. This happens when NORDOT® Adhesive is
specified and the bidder wants to use either less adhesive (ex.
strip gluing vs. total glue-down) or a different, cheaper
adhesive.
Bottom line: Does the specification “change”
put more money in their pocket at the customer’s risk? If so,
BEWARE!
