CoverSports FenceMate® Tennis Windscreens Block Courts from Wind and Distraction and Showcase Team Spirit

Unionville High School in Kennett Square, PA recently installed new FenceMate tennis windscreens on their courts. The fence covers replaced those that were purchased in 2007 from CoverSports (lasting 3 years beyond the 3 year warranty), due to typical ‘wear and tear’. The coaches and players wanted to continue having the benefit of blockage from wind and distractions.

Humphrys-CoverSports custom made windscreens out of 8oz. Vinyl Coated Polyester Mesh of varying heights and lengths for their two tennis courts (with 9 foot high fences). The windscreens included IncrediSeal™ heat-sealed hems and grommets at 18” intervals. Unionville High School chose Navy fabric and added Athletic Gold lettering to showcase their team colors and spirit. The coaches preferred to have shorter windscreens for the adjoining fence so they could observe the players during practices and matches. When UHS expressed desire to see ‘UHS TENNIS’ from any direction and both sides of the fence, CoverSports recommended printing the lettering on vinyl panels because they would be more visible on the solid fabric.

Field of Dreams

ASBA member GMB Architecture + Engineering of Holland, Michigan, in collaboration with Visbeen Architects, LLC (a GMB-owned company), is watching with interest as a one-of-a-kind baseball stadium is being constructed on the campus of Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This facility uniquely combines a baseball stadium with a residence hall. Yes, you heard that correctly! A baseball stadium and residence hall, together!

The ground floor includes baseball and softball offices, locker rooms, training center, weight room, indoor batting cages, restrooms and concessions area. The residence hall occupies the top two floors of the stadium building and houses 92 beds. While construction of the artificial field turf was completed last summer, the remainder of the project will be complete by the first week of August, just in time for student move-in.

Cornerstone University hasn’t fielded a baseball team since 1996. A significant donation back in 2011, with the purpose of re-launching the baseball program and building a new stadium changed that. GMB design work began, a construction manager was selected, coaching staff were hired and a team was recruited. Cornerstone’s Golden Eagles hosted their home season opener on Thursday, March 14, winning both games.

The stadium features a FieldTurf playing surface, including the batter's box, pitching mound and warning track. The park dimensions are 325' down each line, 376' to right and left center and 400' to center. The project also features sport lighting, a multi-media scoreboard and LED video screen, a state-of-the-art second floor press box and seating for approximately 500, with some under cover.

GMB Architecture + Engineering is a full service architecture and engineering firm, employing about 90 professionals, with offices in Holland, Michigan; Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Indianapolis, Indiana.

Sportsfield Specialties Lands Major Equipment Order from ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex

Sportsfield Specialties Inc. (SSI) of Delhi has completed its first-ever equipment order for the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, shipping eight of its innovative PortaPitch portable pitching mounds to the popular multi-sport training and competition facility outside Orlando, FL. Each year the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex hosts thousands of baseball players for tournaments and training sessions. The SSI PortaPitch units will be utilized whenever its multi-purpose grass fields are configured for baseball.

The PortaPitch is the only portable pitching mound that matches the 18’ diameter of an official major league mound and meets both the 10” height and slope-to-finished-grade requirements. It has seven structural sections and when assembled features a clay filled center section and an official pitching rubber to give it the feel of a permanent clay mound. It also features a drop-down wheel system for transport that enables grounds crews to change sports on a multi-purpose field in less than an hour.

Besides its versatility and durability, the PortaPitch allows pitchers to move naturally when pitching and fielding. Portable fiberglass mounds used previously at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex often sustained spike damage and needed replacement.

“We are extremely pleased that the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex has chosen our PortaPitch for its multi-sport fields,” said Wayne Oliver, President of SSI. “It was designed and constructed for heavy duty use so this will be a great opportunity to demonstrate its durability and realistic playability to players and their coaches.”

Baseball has become an increasingly important segment of SSI’s overall manufacturing business. Its product line includes foul poles, backstop netting systems, batting tunnels, dugouts, benches, and bat and helmet storage units. In addition, its subsidiary, Promats Athletics of Salisbury, NC provides a wide range of protective padding for stadium walls, dugouts and railings for pro and college teams.

Sporturf Expands into the Midwestern United States

Sporturf, an international manufacturer and builder of synthetic turf fields, has significantly expanded its presence in the Midwest with the opening of the company’s third regional field office in Kansas City, Missouri. Sporturf Midwest is under the leadership of President Craig Shonk, and will focus on Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas.

“This strategic move opens up a market that Sporturf has not really been in before,” noted Shonk. “Bringing an ISO manufacturer and a Midwest-based ASBA certified field builder together gives clients the best of both worlds.”

Sporturf Midwest recently completed their first, full-size turf install in Nebraska and having a regional presence made the project seamless for all parties. “Allowing clients to build a direct relationship with their synthetic turf manufacturer gives them unprecedented peace of mind,” added Darby McCamy, Sporturf Fields Vice President. “We have bridged the gap between owner and manufacturer with our team of certified field builders, who focus on the design-build process more than the next sale.”

The Sporturf main office and mill is located in Dalton, Georgia, and San Diego-based Sporturf International started in 2003. In addition, Sporturf International serves some of the most prominent sports facilities in South America and the Caribbean, such as the Haiti FIFA National Stadium and Eddy Coello Stadium in Ecuador.

UBU Sports Completes Removal and Re-Installation of Super Bowl 47 Game Field in New Orleans

After the drama unfolded and the Baltimore Ravens were crowned the NFL Super Bowl 47 Champions, UBU Sports was priming their team to tackle a great achievement for a special program. Immediately after the crowds left the Mercedes Benz Superdome the UBU Sports crew started removing the 112,720 sq ft Speed S5-M synthetic turf field. UBU donated the field to the local New Orleans Recreation Development Foundation (NORD Foundation) for continued use with the City of New Orleans Parks & REC programs. The Super Bowl game field was re-installed in Harrell Stadium which is an integral facility for the City of New Orleans Parks & Rec Department this past March. The game field will host youth sports programs throughout the year where the kids can play on the same field as their NFL heroes. UBU Sports would like to thank everyone involved with this special project for the City Of New Orleans.

Urge Fitness Provides Members with a Luxurious Gym Experience

One of Urge Fitness’ tag lines is “to expect a fitness experience like no other.” And that’s just what you will encounter at its new facility in Ewing, N.J. This fitness center offers everything from personal and large group training to speed training and conditioning, group exercise, nutrition counseling, and The Challenge – a group training class and total weight loss system.

In order to provide all of these amenities, Urge Fitness has designated spaces in its facility for each of these activities. This includes a personal training and boot camp area, spin room, cardio area, Group X section where Zumba, kick boxing, Pilates and aerial yoga are performed, pro shop, and BlendBar cafe.

To help differentiate each of these areas, Urge Fitness installed various ECORE Commercial Flooring (ECF) products – Everlast rolled goods, Everlast UltraTile™, Everlast Terf, and Polyflor’s Expona. LG’s Rexcourt™ was also used. ECF is a sales entity that encompasses five innovative brands - Everlast, QT, ECO98, ECOsurfaces and Polyflor - that are ideal for the commercial flooring market.

“I had used rubber flooring in another club that I had years ago,” said Shayne Michaelis, Principal of Urge Fitness. “I reached out to Mark Giuranna at ECORE. I was strictly going for the rubber, and then it opened me up to all of these other products and possibilities.”

Everlast rolled goods were installed throughout the cardio area, spin room, and on the main floor; Everlast UltraTile was used in the weight room; Polyflor’s Expona, a luxury vinyl tile, was installed around the front desk, café, on the walkways, and in the locker rooms; and, LG’s Rexcourt, a performance flooring that offers the look of hard wood, was used in the Group X training area. Last, but not least, the Everlast Terf that was installed is unique, because it looks like grass. Terf also features ECORE’s itstru technology, which allows a nylon wear layer to be fused to a backing that contains post-consumer recycled rubber and is ideal for high-performance sports and fitness venues.

“We installed Everlast in Grippin’ Grey rolled rubber on a 35-foot track,” said Michaelis. “We built it right into the Terf, and the track is about 8 feet wide. This area is used for our TRX classes, where participants flip tires and pull sleds. Total personal training and a functional boot camp are also held here. The Terf area is where you will find all the toys.”

In addition to being functional and attractive, what Michaelis likes most about the flooring available through ECF is that it’s easy to clean. “Normally you see carpet in a cardio area and where you hold spin classes,” said Michaelis. “If someone spills something, you can’t clean it up. Now all we have to do is get a mop and a bucket, and it looks brand new again. That holds true with where we installed Rexcourt too. Usually hardwood would be installed here, but the Rexcourt is easier to clean and wears well.”

After being open less than a month, Urge Fitness’ Ewing, N.J. location already has 247 members. “People are definitely impressed,” said Michaelis, and he is very satisfied with the flooring.

“I plan to use ECF products in other clubs and am looking to start opening the next one in 2 or 3 months,” said Michaelis. “It all looks great, especially the Everlast. The black rubber with the little speckles gives the flooring character.”
