ASBA Members Get Away, Get Connected at Technical Meeting
Highest-Ever Number of Attendees Travels to San Antonio

Fresh off of one busy season, ASBA members and others in the sports facility construction industry met in San Antonio, Texas, for the association’s annual Technical Meeting. There, the hard-working pros in the industry were able to unwind, kick back and re-connect with one another.

The meeting, held at the Grand Hyatt in San Antonio, Texas, saw ASBA’s highest registered attendance ever with a whopping total of 468 industry members! The meeting, held December 6-10, offered high-quality technical program, an outstanding keynote speaker, a trade show with sports-specific products and services – and some of the best opportunities for making new friends and learning new information.

The keynote speaker was Jim Morris, upon whose experiences the movie, “The Rookie,” starring Dennis Quaid, was based. Morris, a high school teacher and baseball coach, promised his rag-tag team that if they won a

division championship, he would try out for a spot pitching in the Major Leagues – a dream he had abandoned long ago. When the kids delivered a championship, Morris kept his promise. He made it into MLB and in front of his team, struck out the first batters he faced.

Morris’ message was simple: nothing is impossible with hard work and a good belief system. His presentation was enthusiastically received by all those in attendance, who gave him a standing ovation at the conclusion.

But Morris, amazing as he was, was not the only MVP at the Technical Meeting. The meeting offered its always popular trade show, as well as excellent technical programming, with sessions addressing every membership division, as well as general business topics that cover matters of employment, law, planning and more. (See elsewhere in this newsletter for a synopsis of several programs). The association also presented its annual awards, honored its own and even found time for some fun, when members braved unseasonably cool temperatures to play in the Golf Tournament.

The theme of the meeting was “Connections,” and those in attendance had ample opportunities to make new connections, rekindle long-standing ones and still manage to get away from the office. There were opportunities to take the certification exam, learn about ASBA’s publications and committees and more.

The next Technical Meeting will be December 6-10, 2014 at the Sawgrass Marriott in Ponte Vedra, FL. Mark your calendar now and keep an eye on the website!
