Continued Rising Lumber Prices Prompts Price Increase at Action Floor Systems

Action Floor Systems, one of the largest suppliers of hardwood maple sports floor systems in the U.S., has announced a price increase of 5-7 % on all maple flooring effective December 16, 2013, according to company president Tom Abendroth.

"Lumber costs have increased dramatically during the past two years due to constrained supply and greater market demand," Abendroth stated. "Increasing our pricing at this time is necessary to maintain the level of product quality and service our customers expect and to continue our commitments to new product development and sustainable forests."

"If lumber prices continue to rise, and we think they will, additional increases may be necessary" Abendroth noted. A good barometer to know what to expect going forward is the Hardwood Market Report, which is an authority on reporting lumber pricing around the country.

Action Floor Systems, LLC manufactures a wide selection of high-performance hardwood sports floor systems, and also offers Action Herculan® polyurethane synthetic systems, Action QuickCourt™ performance modular sports floor system, Action RexCourt® vinyl sheet, Action ReFlex® recycled rubber flooring products, and the patented Action AirRide floor cover systems.

LSI Industries Supplies LED Tennis Court Lighting System for Alton, IL Residence

Historically, lighting for outdoor tennis courts required metal halide systems because of the high light levels required for effective play. The homeowner constructing a tennis court at their residence in Alton, IL was looking for a more innovative option and chose an LED lighting system manufactured by LSI Industries. As compared to traditional 1000w metal halide fixtures, the LSI solid-state LED fixtures reduced the total connected electrical load more than 50%. The eight pole lighting system provides vivid illumination with uniform lighting levels across the playing surface. The forward throw reflector system of the LED fixtures provides sharp cutoff behind the fixtures, eliminating spill light to the area surrounding the court. The LED lighting system will provide years of maintenance-free operation with little lumen depreciation over the life of the system. An added bonus is that the LED fixtures operate at full brightness immediately when they are turned on, as opposed to the gradual warm-up time required for metal halide fixtures. In the end, the homeowner and the installing contractor (McConnell Sports / St. Louis, MO) agreed that the LED lighting system was a winner.

SportsEdge Announces TERMINATOR System

SportsEdge® is proud to announce the release of the TERMINATOR™ System, the next generation of drainage design for synthetic turf athletic fields. Unlike other edge or sheet drain installations or traditional stone base designs, this patent pending system creates a completely self-contained, engineered drainage envelope that will capture of ALL of the storm water on a synthetic turf field, with or without a track.

This “base in a box” concept is the natural outgrowth of track drain systems and is based on the time-tested SportsEdge XT-4 Track Drain. But the TERMINATOR™ goes a step further in the evolution of synthetic turf drainage. It replaces the site- built dynamic stone base and collector pipe sub-surface designs with a shallow, serviceable surface drainage product.

Poorly draining soil conditions and high water tables are no challenge for the TERMINATOR. All storm water collection takes place near the field surface. Well draining fields can now be built on sites with mixed sub-grade soil types, expansive soils, high water tables…..without the cost of stripping and replacing materials.

TERMINATOR™ handles any storm water event, improves G-Max performance, reduces construction costs and time to project completion, lowers environmental impact, and takes the guesswork out of field drainage; Guaranteed performance every time, under any conditions. The TERMINATOR System is the faster, easier and smarter way to drain synthetic turf fields and tracks.

Sportsfield Specialties Plays Key Role in Restoration of Philadelphia Field

The dedication of Team Vick Field in August 2013, which featured Eagles quarterback Michael Vick cutting the ceremonial ribbon to officially open the field, also brought recognition for Sportsfield Specialties Inc. (SSI) of Delhi which supplied new GoalPak® Combination Football Goal Post and Soccer Goal Systems with corresponding football goal post pads and ComBox® Electrical/Communication Junction Boxes to the $1.4 million restoration of the playing field at Hunting Park in Philadelphia, PA. Representing SSI at the dedication ceremony were David Moxley, Director of Sales, Jake Newkerk, Mid-Atlantic Regional Sales Manager and Matt Moyse, Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Customer Service Manager.

The new and improved Team Vick Field represents the successful collaboration of many organizations, companies, and individuals in bringing the field back to prominence as a centerpiece of Hunting Park. SSI and other contributors are recognized on a permanent sign at one end of the field not far from one of the company’s goal posts.

Team Vick Field is once again the home field for the North Philly Aztecs, the neighborhood Pop Warner team which left Hunting Park when the field, suffering from neglect, became unsafe and unplayable nearly 20 years ago. The field is also the new home for the Little Flower High School girl’s soccer team. The finished project shines thanks to a new synthetic infill turf athletic field playing surface, repaved asphalt running track, new field drainage, field lighting, scoreboards and the athletic equipment manufactured and supplied by SSI.

The listing of backers of the Hunting Park Revitalization Project who brought momentum to the project following a $200,000 donation from Michael Vick’s Team Vick Foundation includes the City of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, the Fairmount Park Conservancy, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Eagles, JAWS Youth Playbook (headed by former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski), LISC Philadelphia, Philadelphia Chevy Dealers, CBS Eco Media, Patricia Kind, Laura and Marc McKenna, North Philly Aztecs, NRG Energy, Seravalli Inc., and SSI.

The throng of neighborhood kids who joined the dedication festivities wasn’t lost on Moyse, who initiated SSI involvement in the project. “For years we’ve been supplying our equipment to professional teams, colleges, and high schools through designers and contractors, but this was one of those rare opportunities where we could contribute directly to a high-use community recreation facility,” said Moyse. “Those kids will be the beneficiaries of Team Vick Field and we at SSI feel very good about that.”

Tighe & Bond Design Greenwood Playground

Tighe & Bond provided the City of Gardner with design services to rehabilitate the Greenwood Playground located in the heart of downtown Gardner, Massachusetts. The playground was last renovated in 1986 and the existing tennis courts, playscape, and basketball court had deteriorated to the point where they were seldom used by residents in the area. Recent upgrades completed at the playground breathed new life into this vibrant community asset. This included demolition of the old tennis courts, replacement of the basketball court and playscape, rehabilitation of the youth baseball diamond, and installation of new sidewalks, benches, and fencing. The new outdoor asphalt based basketball court was built to NCAA size standards and included a state of the art textured acrylic based latex surface in multiple colors.

Tighe & Bond’s scope of work for the project included helping the City during planning for the playground upgrades, preparation of construction documents for the project, and assistance with public bidding and administration of the construction contract. In addition, the company provided on-site construction observation during the rehabilitation work. As part of the project planning phase, Tighe & Bond also participated in a public forum with City officials to obtain input and ideas on the proposed upgrades from abutters and neighbors to the park.

Construction of the playground upgrades began in April 2013, and was completed in late November of the same year. Future plans for additional upgrades at the playground include the installation of a skateboard park.

Tighe & Bond is a one of the most experienced engineering firms in New England, with offices in Pocasset, Westfield, and Worcester, Massachusetts; Middletown and Shelton, Connecticut; and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. With a team of more than 240 employees, Tighe & Bond provides engineering and environmental services for clients in government, industry, healthcare, education, real estate, energy, and water/wastewater markets.

Urge Fitness Provides Members with a Luxurious Gym Experience

One of Urge Fitness’ tag lines is “to expect a fitness experience like no other.” And that’s just what users will encounter at its facility in Ewing, N.J. This fitness center offers everything from personal and large group training to speed training and conditioning, group exercise, nutrition counseling, and The Challenge – a group training class and total weight loss system.

In order to provide all of these amenities, Urge Fitness has designated spaces in its facility for each of these activities. This includes a personal training and boot camp area, spin room, cardio area, Group X section where Zumba, kick boxing, Pilates and aerial yoga are performed, pro shop, and BlendBar cafe.

To help differentiate each of these areas, Urge Fitness installed various ECORE and ECORE Commercial Flooring (ECF) products – Everlast rolled goods, Everlast UltraTile®, Everlast Terf, and Polyflor’s Expona. LG’s Rexcourt™ was also used. ECORE, a company that transforms reclaimed waste into unique performance surfacing, manufactures Everlast. ECF is a sales entity that encompasses innovative brands, including Polyflor that are ideal for the commercial flooring market.

“I had used rubber flooring in another club that I had years ago,” said Shayne Michaelis, Principal of Urge Fitness. “I reached out to Mark Giuranna at ECORE. I was strictly going for the rubber, and then it opened me up to all of these other products and possibilities.”

Everlast rolled goods were installed throughout the cardio area, spin room, and on the main floor; Everlast UltraTile was used in the weight room; Polyflor’s Expona, a luxury vinyl tile, was installed around the front desk, café, on the walkways, and in the locker rooms; and, LG’s Rexcourt, a performance flooring that offers the look of hard wood, was used in the Group X training area. Last, but not least, the Everlast Terf that was installed is unique, because it looks like grass. Terf also features ECORE’s itstru technology, which allows a nylon wear layer to be fused to a backing that contains post-consumer recycled rubber and is ideal for high-performance sports and fitness venues.

“We installed Everlast in Grippin’ Grey rolled rubber on a 35-foot track,” said Michaelis. “We built it right into the Terf, and the track is about 8 feet wide. This area is used for our TRX classes, where participants flip tires and pull sleds. Total personal training and a functional boot camp are also held here. The Terf area is where you will find all the toys.”
In addition to being functional and attractive, what Michaelis likes most about the flooring available through ECF is that it’s easy to clean. “Normally you see carpet in a cardio area and where you hold spin classes,” said Michaelis. “If someone spills something, you can’t clean it up. Now all we have to do is get a mop and a bucket, and it looks brand new again. That holds true with where we installed Rexcourt too. Usually hardwood would be installed here, but the Rexcourt is easier to clean and wears well.”

After being open less than a month, Urge Fitness’ Ewing, N.J. location already had 247 members. “People are definitely impressed,” said Michaelis, and he is very satisfied with the flooring.

“I plan to use ECORE products in other clubs and am looking to start opening the next one in 2 or 3 months,” said Michaelis. “It all looks great, especially the Everlast. The black rubber with the little speckles gives the flooring character.”
